Dermal fillers have seen a sharp rise in popularity, and for good reason. The technology has come a long way since the days of using collagen, with varied formulations that can be customized for different areas of the face on each patient. Dr. Naomi Brooks uses hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers approved by the FDA, such as Juvederm® and Restylane®, at Boise Dermatology to fill in lines, wrinkles, and folds, and boost or restore volume in the cheeks and lips.
Hyaluronic acid is a sugar compound that is produced naturally in the body and provides the skin with its hydration, fullness, and elasticity. But both the production process and existing reserves of hyaluronic acid in the body are reduced due to the aging process and environmental factors. The synthetic hyaluronic acid found in dermal fillers such as Restylane® and Juvederm® is near-identical to that produced in the body, allowing it to safely and effectively improve the signs of aging.
The classic formulation from the Restylane® family is used to boost volume and add fullness to the skin to improve the appearance of moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles, such as nasolabial lines (the lines that extend from the corners of the nostrils to those at the mouth) and marionette lines (the lines that extend down from the corners of the mouth). In some cases, Restylane® may also be used for volume-enhancing lip injections. It is safe for use in patients over 21.
While the signs of aging tend to be most associated with lines and wrinkles, part of the process tends to include volume loss in the midface area (i.e. the cheeks). This results in a saggy or deflated appearance, which hides the youthful contours we once had. Lyft is FDA-approved for cheek augmentation—and by gradually boosting volume in this area, Dr. Brooks is able to restore her patients' facial contours to achieve a refreshed yet natural appearance.
As we age our skin goes through many changes. How we care for our skin in adolescence is very different to regimens required for maintaining healthy skin in our later years. Let Dr. Brooks explain.Learn More
Restylane® Silk is the first product approved by the FDA that is specialized for lip augmentation, as well as to reduce surrounding perioral rhytids (vertical lines and wrinkles around the mouth). A skilled injector such as Dr. Brooks can also tailor treatment to restore or enhance the lips' contours. Lip augmentation with Restylane® Silk is suitable for patients who have lost fullness as a result of the aging process, as well as for patients who have naturally thin lips and are simply looking for a boost.
Juvederm® Ultra is a member of the Juvederm® line of dermal fillers from Allergan. This FDA-approved filler can be used to increase fullness in the lips, as well as treat other facial lines, wrinkles, and folds. Like Restylane® Silk, Juvederm® Ultra is suitable for restoring age-related thinning of the lips as well as to plump naturally thin lips. This filler is proven to last up to a year.
In some patients, neuromodulators such as BOTOX® Cosmetic & Dysport®, or a combination of fillers and neuromodulators, may be the best course of action. Dr. Brooks can help you determine a suitable course of treatment that can achieve your desired goals.
